Interpersonal skills are the social and emotional abilities that enable individuals to interact effectively with others. These include cooperation, active listening, empathy, negotiation, adaptability, and conflict management. In any collaborative setting-such as classrooms, workplaces, or community initiatives-these skills play a decisive role in determining how smoothly and productively a group functions. Technical knowledge alone is not sufficient for collective success; the ability to understand others’ perspectives, express ideas clearly, and manage differences constructively is equally essential.
From a psychological standpoint, interpersonal competence is not innate but developed over time through social interaction, observation, and continuous feedback. Individuals learn how to interpret social cues, regulate emotions, and respond appropriately by engaging with peers in diverse situations. Constructive feedback helps people recognize the impact of their behaviour on others, refine communication styles, and develop mutual respect.
