Synopsis

The twenty-first century confronts humanity with urgent questions of survival, justice, and responsibility. Climate change, widening inequalities, and rapid technological disruptions remind us that education cannot remain confined to rote learning or the passive transmission of knowledge. Instead, education must be reimagined as a catalyst for transformation, equipping learners with the skills, values, and vision to create sustainable futures. This book, Education for Sustainable Futures: Pedagogy, Policy, and Practice, emerges from the recognition that sustainability is not an optional theme but a moral and practical imperative. It seeks to weave together three critical strands: pedagogy, the art and science of teaching; policy, the frameworks that shape and regulate education; and practice, the lived realities within schools, universities, and communities. By addressing these dimensions collectively, the book aspires to provide readers with a comprehensive map of the challenges and opportunities that define education for sustainable development (ESD). Each chapter builds upon a central belief that sustainability education is inherently interdisciplinary, participatory, and value-driven. It draws from global frameworks such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, yet remains attentive to local contexts, Indigenous wisdom, and the everyday practices of learners and educators. Real-world examples, institutional case studies, and community initiatives are woven throughout, demonstrating how principles of sustainability take shape in diverse educational settings. The book is written with a sense of hope. Education holds the promise of nurturing resilient individuals and communities capable of imagining and building better futures. While the path toward sustainability is complex and fraught with barriers, it is also rich with possibilities. By re-envisioning pedagogy, strengthening supportive policies, and fostering innovative practices, education can become a powerful force in shaping a just, equitable, and sustainable world.
