Synopsis

Research problems rarely respect the boundaries of academic departments. A question about adolescents and smartphones draws on psychology, medicine, education and technology design. A question about explainable artificial intelligence in environmental decision-making involves computer science, law and public policy. International Perspectives on Multidisciplinary Research: Bridging Humanities, Science and Technology was compiled with this in mind. It brings together ten chapters by researchers working in computing, education, law, geography, health and the social sciences, so that readers can see how different disciplines frame related concerns.

Three concerns run through the volume. The first is how technology, whether backend infrastructure, predictive analytics, artificial intelligence or the smartphone, changes the way organisations, institutions and young people work and learn. The second is how education responds through assessment, gamification, study habits, and the effort to bring Indian knowledge traditions into conversation with new technologies. The third is how law, policy and social structure decide who benefits and who is protected, as seen in studies of whistleblower legislation, AI governance and gender gaps in access to digital city services.

The methods are as varied as the subjects. Several chapters are structured literature reviews. Others report empirical work, including a classroom pilot study in Uttarakhand and a household survey across three Indian cities. One chapter is written in Hindi, and we have kept it in that language deliberately, because scholarship on Indian knowledge traditions should be accessible in the language in which it is most naturally discussed. Each chapter sets out its objectives, methods, limitations and directions for future research, so that readers can judge the strength of the evidence for themselves.

We thank the contributing authors for their work and cooperation in preparing this volume, and Wissira Press for its support in publishing it. The views expressed in each chapter are those of its authors. We hope the book is useful to students, teachers, researchers, practitioners and policymakers who work across disciplinary lines.
