The Context:  

Denzel frequently speaks at universities about the reality of the acting world. You will fail, he says, so you might as well fail toward your goal. 

The Lesson:  

We often try to "cushion" our falls by having "plan Bs" that take us away from our dreams. Denzel suggests that if you are going to take a risk, commit fully. Even a failure should be a step toward the target.
