Synopsis

Shifting from Rote Learning to Experiential Learning
NEP 2020 emphasizes experiential learning over rote memorization. This approach engages learners through activities, projects, experiments, and real-life problem-solving instead of simply recalling facts.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 represents a paradigm shift in how knowledge is imparted and absorbed in Indian classrooms. Traditionally, education in India has been dominated by rote memorization, where students focus primarily on recalling information for examinations rather than developing a deep understanding of concepts. While this system ensured information retention in the short term, it often failed to promote creativity, critical thinking skills, or the ability to apply knowledge to real-world situations.

Experiential learning, as emphasized by NEP 2020, transforms this approach by engaging students through firsthand activities, experiments, projects, and simulations. Instead of passively receiving information, learners are encouraged to actively construct knowledge by connecting theory with practice. For example, a science lesson might include conducting simple experiments that demonstrate the principles being taught, while social science lessons may involve field visits, community projects, or role-playing exercises to understand societal issues.

This method also nurtures critical thinking, collaboration, and decision-making skills. Students begin to see the practical relevance of their studies, which not only enhances long-term retention but also increases motivation and enthusiasm for learning. Furthermore, experiential pedagogy promotes inclusivity by catering to different learning styles-visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic-ensuring that every learner has an opportunity to excel.

By shifting the focus from "what to think" to "how to think," NEP 2020 lays the foundation for a more learner-centric education system. It prepares students not just for examinations but for life, equipping them with skills such as innovation, adaptability, and resilience, which are essential in the 21st-century global context.
