The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 places strong emphasis on developing practical competencies in addition to academic understanding. Traditional education in India has often focused on memorization and theoretical learning, leaving graduates underprepared for professional environments. To address this gap, the policy promotes the inclusion of vocational training, industry exposure, and experiential learning within formal degree programs.
Skill-based education involves learning by doing. Students engage in activities such as laboratory work, field training, workshops, simulations, internships, and project-based assignments. These experiences help them acquire technical abilities, problem-solving skills, teamwork, communication, and professional ethics. By connecting classroom concepts to real situations, learners gain a deeper and more meaningful understanding of their subjects.
Another important aspect of this approach is employability. Industries today seek candidates who can perform tasks effectively from the beginning, rather than those who require extensive training after recruitment. When educational institutions collaborate with industries, students become familiar with current technologies, workplace practices, and market expectations. This alignment reduces the mismatch between academic qualifications and job requirements, making graduates more competitive in the labour market.
Skill integration also encourages entrepreneurship. Students exposed to practical challenges learn how businesses operate, how services are delivered, and how problems are solved in real settings. Not all learners aim for purely academic or research-based careers; some prefer applied professions.
